A free Screen Studio alternative for Mac

Taste Capture Studio combines screen recording, demo editing and social exports with a place to collect design references and share your work.

Choose around the demo you want to make

If you want a free way to record an app, frame it, guide attention with zooms and export a short demo, start with Capture Studio in Taste for Mac. Local recording, editing and exporting are free. Taste’s optional cloud analysis and other account features have their own plan limits.

Screen Studio is a dedicated Mac screen-video editor. Its website also advertises transcript editing, filler-word removal, camera background cutout and upscaling. Those features are not part of this Capture Studio release. If they are central to your workflow, compare them directly before choosing.

The essentials for a polished screen demo

Capture Studio records a display, window or selected area, with optional camera, microphone and system audio. You can trim and split clips, use automatic or manual zooms, adjust editable cursor appearance, choose a background and add timed text or logos.

Camera footage remains separate so you can change between overlay, side-by-side and camera-only layouts by clip. Connected phone and tablet recordings have their own device frame controls. Original footage and editable local drafts remain available after export.

One take, several places to share it

Both apps offer MP4 and GIF exports. Capture Studio can save Wide, Square and Vertical versions in a single export flow, with framing checked for each size. Reel preview helps you keep important content clear of approximate social-app controls.

Save the full source without edits through Save original…, or reopen the draft when you need a different cut. Your local export does not require publishing a public post.

The difference is what happens after the video

Post something you made to your Taste portfolio, or save a design you admire as Inspiration in a collection. Add a note about the detail worth remembering: the timing, the navigation, the spacing or the way the interface responds.

Your saved references, notes and taste profile can then become context for AI tools connected through Taste MCP. A demo can help you explain your product today and give your next design brief a concrete reference. Available context depends on the connected tool and the completed analysis; it is not a promise that an agent can inspect every frame of a video.

Try it with one short interaction

Record a ten-second walkthrough, add one zoom, and export the sizes you actually use. Watch the saved files and reopen the draft. That will tell you more about the fit than a long feature checklist.
