Codex / ChatGPT desktop

You’ll sign in to Taste when your tool asks to connect. Create a free account if you’re new here.

  1. Open Settings → MCP servers → Add server in the desktop app.

  2. Name the server taste, choose Streamable HTTP, and paste https://mcp.buildwithtaste.com/mcp. Save and select Restart.

  3. Select Authenticate for the Taste server and complete the Taste sign-in and consent screen.

  4. Open /mcp in the composer to check the connection, then ask: “Use the taste MCP server to read my Taste library and list its available collections. Report any connection error instead of using local files.”

Desktop, CLI, and IDE share MCP configuration on the same host. Already added in the CLI? Authenticate the existing server. If MCP settings are unavailable in your app version, choose Codex CLI for setup instructions. ChatGPT web needs a separate connection.

Already connected, but Previews is missing?

Previews uses your existing personal Taste connection. Refresh its tools or start a new task to load the latest capabilities. If your tool only sees a saved Fieldwork example, select the production Taste connection above. No separate Previews authorization is needed.

Previews saves generated designs and your review feedback. Generation runs in a coding tool that can create files and capture browser previews. Compatible hosts show the comparison in chat; an authenticated browser review is also available. Quick reference requests stay quick.

Sign in to Taste and review access before a tool connects. Your Taste password stays out of the setup instructions.

Your work stays yours

Taste reads your profile and saves. When you request Previews, it also saves generated designs, feedback, and project decisions. You can review and delete that history. Applying a preview to your application is a separate coding action.

A few useful answers.

I added Taste, but my AI tool cannot see it. What should I check?
Check the client's MCP server list for an authentication or startup error. In Codex, run codex mcp login taste if sign-in is needed, then restart the client and check /mcp. In ChatGPT web, select your Taste app in Developer mode and refresh its tools in app settings. If an error remains, use its exact message to troubleshoot; a missing tool does not always mean you need to sign in again.
Does my local Taste skill mean MCP is connected?
No. The local skill is an exported snapshot of your preferences and references. MCP is a separate authenticated connection that reads your live Taste library. Verify it by asking your AI tool to list your collections through the Taste MCP.
Does connecting Codex also connect ChatGPT web?
No. Codex desktop, CLI, and IDE can share configuration on the same host, but ChatGPT web requires its own app connection and authorization. Connect each tool you intend to use.
Is this free?
Connecting to Taste MCP is free. Reading your profile and references is subject to usage limits. Generating a new collection brief can use your monthly AI generation credits; unchanged cached briefs do not consume another generation credit.
Do my profile changes show up automatically?
Yes. The MCP server reads your profile from Taste in real time. Save a new sample or regenerate your profile and your AI tools see the update on the very next request.
How do I revoke access?
Open Account → MCP Connectors, find the client, and click Disconnect. The token is invalidated immediately.
What data does each client see?
Your taste profile, scoped profiles, saved samples, extracted tokens, collections and collection briefs. Taste Interview tools follow your sharing settings. Clients cannot edit or delete your saved designs; generating a collection brief can create a cached result and consume AI generation credits.
Can AI tools access my collections?
Yes. Connected clients can list and search your collections by name, then request a design brief using the collection ID or slug. Briefs include reference image URLs and design direction. How images appear depends on the AI client.
Can AI tools access my portfolio?
Direct portfolio retrieval is not available in the current production MCP tool set. You can use saved design samples and collection briefs for reference context today.
Is this secure?
Connections use OAuth 2.1 with PKCE. No passwords leave Taste, ever. Tokens are scoped to read-only and bound to mcp.buildwithtaste.com. You can revoke access at any time.
