Capture Studio

Record a product, shape the demo, and save it in the sizes you need. Capture Studio is the free recording and editing workspace in Taste for Mac.

Start with a recording

Open New recording in Taste for Mac. Choose a display, a window, an area, or a connected iPhone or iPad. Camera, microphone and system audio start off; turn on only the inputs you want.

  1. Choose the screen or device you want to show. For a phone or tablet, connect it to your Mac and follow the device connection instructions.
  2. If you want to appear in the demo, choose your camera and check the live preview. Choose a microphone and speak to check its level meter.
  3. Start recording, wait for the countdown, and walk through one clear interaction. Stop when you have the take you need.
  4. Choose Trim & save for a quick video, or Open Capture Studio to edit the presentation. Your original stays available.

Make the important part easy to follow

Trim the ends, split a clip, remove a section or change its speed. Add zooms in the zoom lane and set their timing, scale and focus in the inspector. New projects use Classic zoom with Smooth motion. Automatic zooms use recorded pointer data; imported videos may need manual focus.

Use Frame & background to set the canvas, spacing and background. For phone recordings, the Device panel holds frame models and colors. New phone and tablet projects begin in a vertical 9:16 canvas; you can change it.

Add text, images or a logo, position them on the preview, and drag each overlay’s timeline edges to choose when it appears. Cursor controls apply to recordings with editable cursor data; a pointer already baked into an imported video cannot be restyled.

Keep the camera flexible

Camera video is recorded separately from the screen. For a clip with camera video, choose an overlay, side by side, camera only or screen only. Split the screen clip where you want the layout to change, then adjust that segment.

You can also record camera video or a voiceover after the screen recording. Review the take before using it. Camera layouts belong to clips; this version does not have an independent camera editing timeline or background cutout.

Save one video, or a social pack

Open Export to choose MP4 or GIF, output size and quality. The finished demo includes your edits. Use Save original… for the full source recording without the presentation edits or re-encoding.

For several destinations, choose additional Wide, Square and Vertical versions in Export. Check each version’s framing before saving the pack. The exports render on your Mac; this does not use paid AI generation. GIF has no audio.

You can save the video locally and finish there. Posting to Taste is an optional next step.

Come back to it later

Edits are saved to a local project as you work. Closing the editor or exporting a video keeps that editable draft. Choose File → Saved Recordings… (Command-Shift-O) to search, reopen or reveal a project in Finder.

Use Move to Trash on a recording you no longer need. You can restore it with Finder’s Put Back while it remains in Trash. Removing a local draft does not delete an exported file or an online post. Drafts do not expire automatically.

Give the recording a life beyond the export

Choose Post to Taste from the editor or the export completion screen. Use My work for something you made, or Inspiration for a reference you want to collect. Add a useful title, choose its destination and visibility, and confirm that you have permission to share it.

Once the post is ready, open it on Taste or copy its link when its visibility allows sharing. Design analysis can continue separately; posting success does not mean every analysis has finished. Cloud analysis follows your account’s limits.

Put the reference in a collection and explain what matters in a note. Through Taste MCP, connected tools can use available reference images, notes, extracted design context and your taste profile. This supplies context to your agent; it does not retrain its underlying model or guarantee a particular result.

Try this prompt

Find my “Product interactions” collection in Taste. Inspect the available reference images and my notes. Explain the spacing and visual hierarchy I want to carry into this project, then propose a small improvement using our existing components. Tell me if any video or motion details are unavailable.

How Taste understands your design thinking

Capture Studio can record your narration, but its current design-analysis pipeline uses selected screen frames. It does not automatically transcribe the narration or turn your spoken walkthrough into a Design Judgment profile.

Add a note to the reference to explain why a detail matters. For spoken critique, use separate Taste Interviews where available: completed interviews can contribute to your Design Judgment profile, and interview summaries and transcripts follow your sharing preferences.

An agent can request available references, annotations and your saved Taste Profile through MCP. Saving a new recording does not automatically regenerate that profile or retrain the agent. Refresh the profile when needed, then ask the connected tool to read it. Motion playback and detailed analysis through MCP require Pro.

Know which files you are sharing

A local recording or export stays on your Mac. Posting uploads the edited presentation and the supporting files used for its post and analysis.

Original files / Private backup is optional. When selected, it also backs up the original screen recording, separate camera and audio tracks when present, imported project assets and the editing recipe. Those original files are private to your account; they are not added to the public video page.

Review the recording for private information before posting. Changing the background or hiding the camera does not erase sensitive content from an original backup.
